Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon

April 28, 2019 Adventure

Yesterday I completed my second marathon of the year and fifth overall. The Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon here in Louisville was a nice event. The weather was sunny and warm and the course was scenic. I had previously run the miniMarathon (a half marathon) and found the course to be flat, fast, and fun. I was expecting the same for the full marathon.

The truth be told, the course was fast and fun. However, it certainly was not flat. The second half of the race passes through Iroquois Park, which wa`s nothing but punishing hills. It certainly added an unexpected challenge. Despite the hills, I was able to finish with a personal best time. I was surprised to perform this well; I had just finished a week of work travel that took me first to Aspen and then Juneau. I flew into Louisville the evening before the marathon on limited sleep having traveled across the nation.

This marathon was my fifth in as many states. I’m slowly chipping away at the running a marathon in every state (50 States Marathon Club). I’m hoping to run one more marathon this year. Right now I have my eyes set on Indianapolis in November. Onward!
