Honoring the Legacy of Irene Hirano Inouye

Last Friday, we gathered at the Japanese American National Museum to honor the legacy of Irene Hirano Inouye. The evening program featured a community reception and the inaugural event for the Irene Hirano Inouye Distinguished Lecture Series at JANM’s Daniel K. Inouye National Center for the Preservation of Democracy. The program featured Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, in conversation with Lisa Sasaki, Deputy Under Secretary for Special Projects at the Smithsonian Institution.

It was a truly inspiring evening. Many friends and colleagues shared heartfelt testimonials about Irene’s remarkable work and enduring legacy. Rip Rapson, President & CEO of The Kresge Foundation, spoke about Irene’s exceptional leadership as a trustee of both Kresge and the Ford Foundation, highlighting her crucial role in Detroit’s Grand Bargain. George Takei, Trustee and Chair Emeritus of the Japanese American National Museum, reflected on Irene’s transformative work in bringing JANM to fruition and pioneering the museum’s leadership in community-based and culturally specific approaches. Many others also spoke about her leadership, unwavering commitment to community, and lasting impact.

I was deeply honored to be invited to serve as an advisory board member for the Irene Hirano Inouye Distinguished Lecture Series. Irene and her late husband, Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), were steadfast supporters of the Arab American community. In the difficult years following 9/11, they galvanized the Japanese American community to stand in solidarity with Arab Americans. Irene and her team at JANM also provided invaluable support and mentorship to those of us at the Arab American National Museum, both before and after its opening in 2005. I’m incredibly proud to maintain strong relationships with many past and present JANM staff members—connections that have endured for over 20 years.

Irene was an extraordinary force, and her impact continues to be felt. Her legacy inspires me to work even harder to build a more just democracy, especially during these challenging times.
